Tipping your maid is entirely optional. But if you compare the work a maid does to anyone else you tip you would have to agree the maid is doing harder and dirtier work and probably more deserving of the tip than the waitress or bartender. Maybe you are asking yourself, should you tip a house cleaner?
Also, maids need the extra money. A small tip of just $5 can make you stand out from the crowd and earn you some extra effort. At a minimum, your house will become on of the maid’s favorites. Maids love houses that tip, especially those that tip cash.
If you want to know more about tipping maids, we have found a little less than half of our customers tip every cleaning. This tip tends to range from $5 – $20. Clients who tip all year will often give a smaller holiday tip than clients who did not tip all year.
If you did not tip all year and you want to show your appreciation around the holidays it would be common to offer a tip equal to one house cleaning but this is in no way expected by your maid. If you tipped all year, you may choose to continue with that same amount or offer a double tip for the holidays.
Ultimately, tipping is a personal thing and is entirely at your discretion. With that being said, we know your maid works very hard to please you. We believe that if you are happy with the service and your maid you should tip as often and as much as you can. But we are clearly biased. On the flip side, we also believe that if you are not happy with the maid or service then you should not tip any amount, for any reason.
Useful Tip #1:
Be careful leaving a full tip for the cleaner around the holidays. Sometimes the wrong cleaner can get the money or not distribute it fairly. A good way to insure your tip goes to who you intended is to contact the office and instruct them to distribute the tips to the maids you select for the amount you wish. If you do not know your maids name you can ask the office to review the records and distribute the tip to the cleaners in proportion to the times they cleaned your home.
Useful Tip# 2:
If you don’t trust the cleaning company to properly deliver the tip hold the tip until you see the maid personally and give it to them and explain it is all for them and you wanted to be sure they got it.
